Java Programs - Cookie Packaging (Boxes & Containers Calculation)

A box of cookies can hold 24 cookies, and a container can hold 75 boxes of cookies. Write a program that prompts the user to enter the total number of cookies, the number of cookies in each box, and the number of cookies boxes in a container. The program then outputs the number of boxes and the number of containers required to ship the cookies.

import java.util.Scanner;

public class CookiePackaging {

    public static void main(String[] args) {

        Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in);

        System.out.print("Enter total number of cookies: ");

        int totalCookies = sc.nextInt();

        System.out.print("Enter number of cookies per box: ");

        int cookiesPerBox = sc.nextInt();

        System.out.print("Enter number of boxes per container: ");

        int boxesPerContainer = sc.nextInt();

        // Calculate number of boxes required

        int totalBoxes = totalCookies / cookiesPerBox;

        if (totalCookies % cookiesPerBox != 0) {

            totalBoxes++;

        }

        // Calculate number of containers required

        int totalContainers = totalBoxes / boxesPerContainer;

        if (totalBoxes % boxesPerContainer != 0) {

            totalContainers++;

        }

        System.out.println("\n--- Shipping Requirements ---");

        System.out.println("Total Boxes Required      : " + totalBoxes);

        System.out.println("Total Containers Required : " + totalContainers);

        sc.close();

    }

}

Output

Output 1 :

SAMPLE INPUT : Enter total number of cookies: 1800 Enter number of cookies per box: 24 Enter number of boxes per container: 75 SAMPLE OUTPUT : --- Shipping Requirements --- Total Boxes Required : 75 Total Containers Required : 1

Output 2 :

SAMPLE INPUT : Enter total number of cookies: 5000 Enter number of cookies per box: 24 Enter number of boxes per container: 75 SAMPLE OUTPUT : --- Shipping Requirements --- Total Boxes Required : 209 Total Containers Required : 3

Explanation

  1. Input
  • Total number of cookies
  • Cookies per box
  • Boxes per container

  1. Boxes Calculation
Boxes=Total CookiesCookies per Box\text{Boxes} = \left\lceil \frac{\text{Total Cookies}}{\text{Cookies per Box}} \right\rceil
