Java Program: Maximum of Three Numbers Using Math.max()

Write a program in Java to find the maximum of three numbers using Math.max() method.

import java.util.Scanner;

public class MaximumOfThree {

    public static void main(String[] args) {

        Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in);

        // Input three numbers

        System.out.print("Enter first number: ");

        int a = sc.nextInt();

        System.out.print("Enter second number: ");

        int b = sc.nextInt();

        System.out.print("Enter third number: ");

        int c = sc.nextInt();

        // Find maximum using Math.max()

        int max = Math.max(a, Math.max(b, c));

        // Output

        System.out.println("Maximum of the three numbers = " + max);

        sc.close();

    }

}

Output

SAMPLE INPUT :
Enter first number: 45
Enter second number: 78
Enter third number: 32

SAMPLE OUTPUT :
Maximum of the three numbers = 78

Explanation

  • Math.max(x, y) returns the larger of the two values.
  • First, the maximum of b and c is found.
  • Then, Math.max(a, result) compares it with a.

                  max = max⁡( a, max⁡( b, c))

This gives the largest among three numbers.
